Pirate Name Generator chapter illumination

Pirates collect names the way honest sailors collect scars: involuntarily, and each with a story that improves in the telling. The name on the baptism record rarely survives the first voyage. What survives is the handle, and the handle is earned, which is why nobody aboard is named anything flattering.

The pattern is an honest first name gone to sea with something bolted on: Peggo Half-Hanged, whose rope broke and whose grudge did not. Tessie the Gull, always first to the wreck. Rackard Blackhand, about whom the powder burns say enough. Nobody is baptized Three-Fingers. It is awarded, usually by the same crew that will spend the next decade denying they were there.

A pirate's full name is a warrant, a resume, and an obituary draft in one line. Captains encourage fearsome handles for the same reason merchants fly big flags: reputation does half the boarding before a single blade is drawn. The grimoire notes that the most feared name in any port is usually attached to the quietest table in the tavern.

Margin notes

What makes a good pirate name?

An ordinary first name and an extraordinary attachment: the contrast does the work. Jack is nobody; Jack the Kraken's Debt is a story the harbor tells for free. Deal until the epithet makes you want to know what happened.

Do pirates use real names or aliases?

Both, strategically: the real name for the articles they sign, the handle for the flag they fly, and a third clean name for buying property ashore. The grimoire deals the first two. The third is your character's retirement plan.

How do I name a pirate ship to match?

Turn to the ship chapter: flag-names (The Last Dancer, The Storm Chaser) or a lady's name the captain no longer explains. Pirates favor names their victims can report accurately. It is advertising.
